The topic of today’s review, Cloudways, is a rather unique case. Instead of being a web hosting service provider, Cloudways is a systems integrator that helps people deploy their solutions across a variety of Cloud platforms.
It offers users a fair selection of various cloud platforms ranging from the most affordable digital ocean to expensive as Amazon Web Services (AWS) devs . This means that the actual performance is highly platform dependent rather than responsible for Cloudways.
Of course, you are paying for Cloudways and some of these fees are intended to cover your management services and pay for the addition of features such as service migrations, user panels, and the like.
Because of this unique position they are in, what we pay more attention to than actual performance is how they are set up to help you manage the services you are paying for. This includes things like control panel UI design, adding features like firewall and content distribution network (CDN), and of course customer service.

1. Fast and reliable
While it is true that so far I have found good performance on Cloudways servers, this is more a result of the infrastructure providers themselves. Each of them will have their own performance advantages (and maybe the hassle too!). Again, it depends a lot on the supplier.

2. Integrated control panel
This is great for developers and / or agencies, or even maybe companies that plan to manage several of their own sites separately for some reason. They can offer each of their clients a hosting platform option that they can manage from a single point.
Implement and manage different applications (websites) on different cloud hosting platforms in one place. As the Cloudways motto goes, it is truly “unlimited growth without restrictions”.Manage the basic services of each server using the “Servers” page.
3. Powerful addons
Again to the point that Cloudways is an integrator, this also means that each platform can have its own firewall, as well as CDN services. This is something that can be very useful for new sites on Cloudways, which again reflects their usefulness to developers. It can literally be a one-stop shop for them to target customers.
However, there is a caveat about this and it is the fact that experienced sites that want to move to Cloudways do not find it useful. For example, WHSR is already using Cloudflare , Sucuri and MaxCDN (StackPath) and will not benefit from moving away from them.
However, there are other features that come with Cloudways, for example:
Cloning the server
Server Monitoring in Cloudways – Simple graph to determine when is the right time to upgrade.
Automatic and on-demand backup
Easy Server Backup Features –
4. Simple scalability
One of the major benefits of Cloud-based hosting is that their plans are highly scalable. This gives site owners the potential for extreme agility, but usually requires them to go through support or sales channels.
How much your resources can scale depends on which platform you opt for when you sign up with Cloudways. Each platform has its own peculiarities for climbing. For example, Digital Ocean only allows you to climb upwards. If you want to slow down, you are much more involved.
5. Easy to collaborate
Cloudways has something called a “Team” that allows you to add members to a collaborative group. This allows you to not only combine members into one project but also separate access to different groups. For example, you can assign supporting members or some others to access the cloud console.
The Cloudways Team feature allows you to create team members with different levels of access to your account, servers, and applications.
6. Managed security
Once again, by becoming a system integrator again, Cloudways takes good care of its accounts by overseeing security management. This carries a huge burden on the site owners who sign with them. From the free installation of 1-click SSL to security patches and 2FAs, there is just about everything the site would need most here.
7. Free trial
When it comes to a move as important as Cloud hosting, it always helps to see for yourself what you’re ready for. In some ways, Cloudflare is even more distinct due to the unified panel that can connect multiple Cloud platforms.
This makes your free trial even more attractive and you don’t even need a credit card to sign up. The trial provides full access to all of its features, so you will know exactly what you are buying if you choose to sign with them.
8. Free migration of white glove sites
I tried Cloudways Site Migration Service in January 2019. My WordPress site was fully transferred in less than 2 days – all I did was provide my original account information (domain name, SSH login, cPanel login, etc). and the technical support did all the work. It was a good process.
Cons: What I dislike about Cloudways
1. Limited server control
This is a topic of debate as to whether it is good or not, but I personally think the lack of control over servers is inconvenient. Since to date everything I’ve noticed about the Cloudways environment is inclined towards developers, having those limitations is even more perplexing.
Even for something as basic as setting up a cron job , I had to go with Cloudways support staff for assistance. There was a default form to fill out what was useful, but it still forced me to wait for it to be done – a few days to wait!
For starters, this is useful, but for me or even many developers it would be a waste of time for many of them to be responsible to their clients.
2. Support issues
Having said the nice things about having support as in the previous case, they also have their days off. While in general your live chat staff is very helpful and knowledgeable, you have not always been able to solve some problems.
Waiting for support through the ticket system is like pulling your teeth, except that your teeth will come out faster than they will get help through the ticket you send. Support tickets can take up to a week to get a response.
Even when the problem is resolved, there is usually silence about what happened or how it was fixed. That left me with a lot of questions like; was it my fault? What did they do? Did they get disorganized with something that might break something else I don’t know about?
3. The breeze cache plugin may be better
Like having its own firewall and CDN, Cloudways also comes with a cache in the form of its Breeze WordPress plugin. Again, while this may sound good, it is of some benefit to experienced site owners.
I tried Breeze and it didn’t exactly meet my expectations. In fact, it caused problems with my site in several cases.
Cloudways plans and prices
|Cloudways plans||RAM||CPU Core||storage||Bandwidth||price|
|1 GB||1 core||25 GB||1 TB||$ 10 / mo|
|4 GB||2 core||80 GB||4 TB||$ 42 / mo|
|1 GB||1 core||25 GB||1 TB||$ 12 / mo|
|4 GB||2 core||80 GB||4 TB||$ 50 / mo|
|1 GB||1 core||25 GB||1 TB||$ 11 / mo|
|4 GB||2 core||60 GB||4 TB||$ 44 / mo|
As Cloudways is not the primary provider of the various platform-based services it offers, prices (as well as everything else) vary depending on your choice. There are five main service platforms: Digital Ocean, Linode, VULTR, Amazon Web Services and Google Cloud.
Only at crude prices, Digital Ocean comes with the cheapest download plan at $ 10 a month with 1GB of RAM, single processor core, 25GB storage and 1TB of bandwidth. However, since they are all cloud services, the sky is pretty much the limit of what you can scale.
Regardless of these prices, it is important to note that any platform you sign up for through Cloudways is paying double what the provider would charge if you signed up with them. It’s not a sham, but it’s the price you pay for the many services Cloudways is offering for your convenience.

Verdict: Are Cloud Streets Good for You?
From personal experience I found Cloudways to be a mixed experience. The best thing for me was in terms of performance on the Cloud infrastructure. It was easy to use and there were already a lot of tools. However, at the same time, I miss the control I have with traditional VPS hosting.
The experience will of course differ, depending on your individual situation and the provider or plan you are currently in. I feel like the core is there – the Cloud platform and everything else is a success or failure depending on the need.
Who should I host with Cloudways?
This platform seems ideal for certain companies, such as SaaS providers, start-ups, developers or companies that need more than just an informational website. Scaling flexibility in terms of server power and data transfer is very valuable for resilient sites that require agility. At the same time, they have customer service that is ready to provide you with solutions to any problems you may have.
My two cents is that Cloudways adoption needs to be carefully considered in terms of needs. I can’t see simpler business sites or blogs that require this energy level to operate.
Alternatives to Cloudways
Cloud hosting is not necessarily superior to VPS hosting, as there is also the possibility of scaling the white glove with a good VPS service provider. VPS plans can also be cheaper than Cloud plans (which means a lot cheaper than Cloudways)
Traditional VPS hosting
SiteGround and InMotion hosting are two sources of traditional VPS hosting. Both offer various levels of VPS plans that are just as capable as cloud hosting plans. For example, SiteGround VPS hosting starts on CPU cores 2 with 4GB memory and can go up to cores 4 with 8GB memory at $ 80 / mo (same price with similar plans in Cloudways).
Cloud hosting with cPanel
Hosting and TMDhosting both have shared hosting based on Cloud technology. The first one is especially interesting because it allows for cloud hosting at great prices starting at as low as $ 7.45 per month with CPU cores 2 and 3GB of memory.
